The course aims to develop existing English skills and increase your confidence. It focuses upon learning in a relaxed environment using different activities to encourage learning new skills. It will cover everyday situations such as travel, shopping, health, understanding common signs / notices and asking questions and giving personal information. It will also include spelling and grammar rules and how to complete forms and writing a short piece of text.

Course aim

This course is for students for whom English is a second language. It is aimed to develop existing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and to increase students confidence using the English and to enhance employability skils.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Follow simple instructions and directions (spoken)
  • Write short sentences using capital "I"and full stops.
  • Recognise common words, signs and symbols in everyday situations ( on notices and buildings)
  • Ask questions to get information in a range of everyday situations
  • Express my views and feelings clearly and make a contribution to a group discussion

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
