The Level 2 Award is for learners who are interested in community interpreting work in a voluntary or paid capacity in a range of settings, including housing, education, social care, welfare benefits, immigration and health. The qualification is suitable for learners who: • wish to gain knowledge and skills of community interpreting including the role of codes of practice • learn about the settings where interpreters may be required to work

Course aim

This course is for students who want to work as a community interpreter

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe three places where a community interpreter might work
  • Identify 3 situations where a community interpreter would be useful
  • List three essential skills required by a community interpreter
  • Certa Level 2 Award in Preparation for Work in Community Interpreting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will take part in a range of different activities with your tutor and the other students in your class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Role play and case studies will be used which will enable students to gain some experience of community interpreting sessions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
