Topics will include seventeenth-century material culture – housing and belongings, food and drink, clothing and hygiene; families, relationships, childhood, birth and death; religion, magic, science, and medicine; the world of work; entertainment and leisure; disaster, war and famine. So whether you want to know how to cure the plague, avoid the noose, light your house or enjoy a night on the town the seventeenth century way, this course is for you! Featuring not only lectures and discussions but lots of objects, sources, and activities, including some local material. If possible, the course may include a field trip to seventeenth century buildings in Newcastle.

Find out about daily life and experience in seventeenth century England

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the material culture and daily lives of seventeenth century people
  • Understand their mental world - what made them "tick"
  • Describe and use some of the key sources used in this field

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
