Tutankhamun: Tomb, Treasure and Torment

On discovering Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, Howard carter described seeing 'Wonderful things' within this site in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The session will present an introduction to some of the artefacts found, and also the events leading up to the tomb's discovery. We will also discuss what impact the discovery had on the study of Egypt and beyond

Course aim

The tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered almost 100 years ago, this course will look at the events leading up to it's discovery, discuss the contents, and it's impact on the world of Egyptology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the location of the tomb in the Valley of the kings
  • demonstrate knowledge of the life of Howard Carter before his discovery of Tutankhamun
  • name at least three artefacts that were discovered in the tomb
  • take part in a discussion on the impact of the discovery.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You may find it useful to bring some paper and something to write with

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Information can be given regarding the activities of local archaeological organisations. Further reading can be suggested dependent on the learners particular interests.
