Archaeology across the Empire: Rome in Eastern Egypt

Why were the Romans interested in the east of Egypt? This short course will consider the role of the Romans in the region, and their activities, exploitation and networks. We will primarily look at the archaeological evidence but also consider other sources to see what was gained and the impact on the rest of the Empire

Course aim

This day school will look at archaeological evidence to provide an introduction to Roman activity in eastern Egypt.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of when the Romans were in Egypt.
  • Discuss at least two reasons why Romans were interested in eastern Egypt.
  • Be able to name at least two different archaeological techniques

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You may find it useful to bring some paper and something to write with

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Information can be given regarding the activities of local archaeological organisations. Further reading can be suggested dependent on the learners particular interests.
