Beginners Spanish

This is a practical course that gives you the tools to speak and understand Spanish from the very first session. It will enable you to gradually build up an understanding of how the language works and the vocabulary to use in everyday situations. You will be encouraged to discover a little about the culture and history of Spanish- speaking countries and to continue your study of the language.

Course aim

This course will enable you to communicate in Spanish at a basic level and to discover a little about Spanish-speaking cultures. It will also encourage you to further study the language, history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Ask for places; ask if something is near or far; give and understand directions; name places of interest in a town
  • Ask for, and understand, information about opening and closing times; ask for items at the Tourist Information Office; name the days of the week; recognise numbers up to 10.000; order drinks and snacks in a café
  • Buy clothes and souvenirs; understand sizes and colours
  • Greet others, give basic information about myself, my nationality, my town and my family.
  • Identify with the customs and traditions of Spanish-speaking cultures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A file with paper, file dividers and a pen will be needed. A small Spanish-English dictionary would be useful. Access to the internet for work outside the classroom would be helpful.

  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
