If you don't know your Manet from your Monet or your Picasso from your Kahlo, this is the course for you. A richly illustrated course which will provide a range of the different tools and skills that are needed to begin an understanding of art. We will examine the different ways in which artists use colour, line and perspective. We will think about the reasons why art styles often change so rapidly. We will ascertain the ways in which artists are influenced by other artists and cultures. We will also examine the different ways in which social. political and economic factors can shape artists and their works. We will look at work by Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, Degas, Hopper, Pollock, O'Keefe, Dealuanay, Picasso, Braque, Kahlo, Sheeler, Goya, Rembrandt, Manet,, Van Eyck, Sargent, Whistler, Emin, Sherman, Homer and many, many more.

Course aim

Looking at Art: An introduction to Art History. This richly illustrated brand new course will examine a broad range of artworks and examine the different ways in which they can be understood.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the work of different artists.
  • Examine paintings and offer up some visual and contextual analysis.
  • Understand how art is shaped by broader social, cultural and political issues.
  • Ascertain the reasons for the rapid changes and differences in modern art.
  • Understand the different ways in which art can be studied.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
