You will learn to draw simple objects creating a three dimensional drawing through tone and shading. Working in pencil, graphites and colour pencils. Learn traditional watercolour painting techniques and then combine them with pen work creating a pen and wash painting. After a serous of practice sessions you will then be required to choose one of these mediums and produce a series of paintings or drawings or combination of both, from a subject of your choice.

Course aim

You will learn basic graphite and colour pencil drawing techniques. Learn to apply watercolours and use watercolour pencils . You will have an introduction to Pen and wash, a technique using watercolour and pen

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for anyone who would like to learn to draw and paint .

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • use a graphite pencil to produce a 3d drawing
  • draw a simple object then and shade and colour with coloured pencils
  • understand basic watercolour techniques
  • learn how to use ink pen to sharpen a loose watercolour sketch
  • paint a painting using Pen and Wash techniques

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • demonstrations will be given with each media used.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • No written work will be expected other than the completion of Wea forms and Learning records.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Pencils and some materials will be available for you to try. Having your own is always beneficial to practice in your own time. You will be expected to bring your own consumables such as paint and paper. These can be provided at cost.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

  • The skills you learn in this course, you may be able to use to join a course that will give you qualifications in painting and drawing subjects, with a view to an artistic career. It will provide you with a hobby or therapy .
