In this course we will dive into seventeenth-century social, cultural and material life in England, covering topics like housing and belongings, food and drink, clothing and hygiene; families, relationships, childhood, birth and death; religion, magic, science, and medicine; the world of work; entertainment and leisure; disaster, war and famine. So if you want to know how to cure the plague, avoid the noose, find a partner, light your house or enjoy a night on the town the seventeenth century way, this course is for you! Featuring not only lectures and discussions but replica objects and lots of original sources from house inventories to popular ballads, recipe books to local maps. If desired, the course may include a field trip to seventeenth century buildings in Newcastle.

Course aim

To provide an overview of everyday life in seventeenth century England.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand aspects of the material culture of the seventeenth century
  • Understand aspects of the social systems of the seventeenth century
  • Describe some of the key sources used to study the seventeenth century

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No further material is needed but after each week's course an email will be sent to you if you wish containing notes and ideas for further investigation of the topic.
