From Ashcan to Abstract Expressionism: Sixty Years of American Art. We will examine a wide range of art by American artists and trace the changes that took place in American art in the first sixty years of the Twentieth century. Artists will include Georgia O' Keefe, Stuart Davis, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Marc Rothko, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, John Sloan, Robert Henri, Jacob Lawrence, Charles Sheeler and many more. We will consider how art was shaped by events such as the Great Depression, immigration, the Cold War and other political, social and economic changes. Everyone is welcome. No previous experience or knowledge is needed.

Course aim

This new WEA course will introduce a broad range of American art that was created between 1900 - 1960. We will examine lots of different art movements from Ashcan Art to Abstract Expressionism and look at an extensive range of artists and artworks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise a wide range of art by a large selection of American artists.
  • Understand how American art and artists were shaped by social, political and cultural events in American history.
  • Ascertain the extent to which American art was influenced by European art and other world events and culture.
  • Describe and analyse paintings and other art works.
  • Understand the changes and the reasons for the changes that happened in American art in the period 1900 -1960

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
