The online drawing and water colour course is designed to explore different ways of looking; drawing with a range of materials including pastels (which contemporary artists and the impressionist painters used), and developing a watercolour painting technique. You will develop you're own sketchbooks with observational and imaginative drawing; also mixed media work. We will look at examples of different styles of drawing that a variety of artists use and also pen and ink and water colour techniques.

Course aim

Introduction to drawing and painting techniques (watercolour) Drawing with a range of drawing materials including chalk pastels; drawing and painting with a brush and watercolour. Start a fresh with art or improve your art practice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a sketch book journal and be confident to sketch at home and outdoors.
  • Improve your well - being through enjoying an art session working online with other people and socialising online with others interested in art.
  • You will develop drawing techniques in showing tonal contrast using line, a variety of mark making for cross hatching technique and texture.
  • You will learn about balancing a picture through your composition technique and ways to create pictorial depth
  • You will learn to mix and improve use of colour and develop a knowledge of different colour pigments to make warm or cold colours.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. If you want to understand more about our digital learning platform please visit:
  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit:
  • Sketchbook or loose paper. A4 or A3 sketch pads one of pastel or sugar paper and another of watercolour paper. Pencils HB, 2b, 5B. Chalk Pastels Pen & Ink, Outline pen. Watercolours Synthetic or nylon watercolour brushes of different sizes. Kitchen roll, sponge Apron,
