Would you like to explore beneath the surface of the major Egyptian collection in the UK? This virtual gallery tour provides an opportunity to join an Egyptologist in exploring selected highlights of the Egyptian artefacts on display and in store at the British Museum. We will look at a selection of pieces from Predynastic Egypt to Augustus with an emphasis on New Kingdom Egypt including the tomb paintings of Nebamun. In 90 minutes you will gain an appreciation of Egyptian art and material culture across a period of more than three millennia held in Bloomsbury.

Course aim

This virtual gallery tour will introduce a varied selection of Egyptian artefacts on display and in store in the British Museum enabling an appreciation of the background and importance of each piece.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones. By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Differentiate artefacts from at least four different periods of ancient Egypt
  • Describe a selected Egyptian artefact from the British Museum
  • Identify the original provenance of a major Egyptian artefact from the British Museum
  • Discuss the value of visiting a collection of Egyptian artefacts in the UK

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • This will be a virtual gallery tour with tutor presentation of images with the opportunity for discussion.
