Introduction to Childcare with life-coaching

This is a 15 hour course (5 weeks x 3 hours) to introduce adult students to concepts common in children’s care and development, intended to act as a taster for further study with the WEA or other organisations. It will look at working with under-5s specifically, and is suited to beginners who are interested in finding out what is involved in child care and would like to pursue a career in working with children. The course will cover following broad areas at an introductory level: - Career options in childcare (under 5s) - Child development stages and milestones - Safeguarding - keeping children safe from harm, recognising and reporting abuse. - Writing Observations on children - Being inclusive: supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities - What's next? Courses and pathways for students to develop their learning and career in childcare, e.g. WEA Pathways. - Each session includes 1-hour group life coaching on career choices ,at the end of each session.

Course aim

Would you like to find out what is it like to work with children under 5 and make a career of it? We introduce you to: - child development stages for 0-5 year olds - Early Years Foundation Stage - Safeguarding - Inclusivity.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is delivered via Gateway Housing Association, according to their criteria.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an idea about childcare for under 5s and know where and how to find more information
  • Build my confidence and motivation to make choices about a career in childcare
  • Know the basics in child development for under 5s, safeguarding and inclusivity
  • Have an action plan for my future steps and goals regarding a career in childcare

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • If attending 80% or more of the time, you will receive an Attendance Certificate.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

This course is funded by the Greater London Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.
