Artists at War: World War 1

Ref: C2421374

A vast amount of images were produced during World War One. Along with photography and film, painting, drawing and sculpture were instrumental in creating a compelling record of the war. We will explore artists’ attitudes towards the war. Four main types of pictures will be discussed: sketchbooks filled by soldiers at the front; paintings and sculptures done by official war artists; war memorials; and works in which avant-garde artists addressed the war from a critical stance. As they were confronted with a totally new type of warfare and unprecedented destruction, artists had to find new ways to visually translate their wartime experiences. Although we will focus on British art and artists (such as Nevinson, Paul Nash, and Muirhead Bone) we will draw comparisons with the works of German, French and Italian artists.
