Beginners will be introduced to the domestic sewing machine, they will be taught how to carry out a range of basic sewing skills and techniques, gain experience working with simple patterns and learn how to cut out fabric accurately, they will be set projects designed to help develop their understanding of garment construction and in the process learn how to make simple garments for children and for themselves.

Course aim

The course caters for both beginners and those with some experience, they will be introduced to a range of sewing skills/techniques and tools/equipment that will help them make a range of simple garments for children and for themselves.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn how to use the domestic sewing machine safely and carry out a range of basic sewing skills & techniques
  • Learn how to work with commercial patterns and cut out fabric accurately
  • Gain a better understanding of how different types of garments are made
  • Produce a selection of simple garments for children and themselves

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
