Start afresh with art or improve your art practice exploring different ways of looking; work in a group in a warm and friendly atmosphere learning techniques with watercolour and mixed media. Develop drawing skills including observational drawing and expressing your ideas from imagination. We will look at examples of different styles of drawing that a variety of artists use, work from objects. Aimed at people using St Charles Mental Health Centre.

Course aim

An introduction to art skills and relaxation using drawing, mixed media materials and watercolour. Have fun and relax, drawing on your imagination or from observation with guidance from your tutor;

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Improve your well being and reduce anxiety through engaging with art making something using your creative skills.
  • Improve your well being through working in a group, meeting others interested in creating and make new friendships.
  • Develop or improve observational drawing skills
  • You will develop watercolour painting techniques and improve your ability to use colour and paint handling skills.
  • Be able to use transparent watercolour glazes to build up an image in layers.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
