Following the success of our presentation JOURNEYS at The Playground Theatre we are now presenting another work at the Playground on Feb 6. Each week we meet in the cafe at St. Charles and write poetry, prose even dilalogues on themes like isolation, happiness, love . All the students work will be woven together by the writing tutor who is a professioal playwright and students will have the joy of reading them out in front of an invited audience. Everyone is welcome even if they just want to observe..

Course aim

The course is designed for all patients at the St. Charles Mental Health unit as well as patients who are now out in the community. We will draw on all patients creative skills to stage a presentation at the Playground Theatre.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • all you need is a desire to express yourself in a safe environment

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • write with more confidence
  • free my creative subconscious
  • write on my own
  • appreciate other work
  • gain an inner confidence

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • homework will be set each week to stimulate creativity

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
