The course will describe the experience of Jews living in England from 1066 to present day. It will explain the reasons behind their immigration, assimilation, persecution and expulsion in mediaeval times. It will then look at why they were readmitted by Oliver Cromwell and their subsequent reintroduction to British society in the eighteenth century and Victorian times culminating in the rise of Zionism and the Balfour Declaration

Course aim

The course will describe the experience of Jews living in Britain from 1066 to present day in relation to antisemitism as well as their assimilation

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand why Jews were invited to come to England under the Normans and understand their subsequent assimilation in British society
  • Understand the reasons why Jews were persecuted in mediaeval times leading to their expulsion
  • Understand why the Jews were readmitted by Oliver Cromwell
  • Understand how the Jews were gradually assimilated in British society in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries leading to their social and political emancipation
  • Understand the reasons behind the growth of Zionism, the Balfour Declaration and The British Mandate for Palestine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • All materials will be provided
