an exciting new course taking in latest developments in using a sewing machines, safe cutting skills with the Rotary cutter ruler and safety mat. during the course we will cover inserting a zip using the machine and finishing techniques, to produce a cushion, bag or small patchwork quilt.

Course aim

You will be able to learn new sewing skills with the sewing machine and safe cutting skills using a rotary cutter. at the end of the course you will have produced an item of soft furnishing cushion, bag or small quilt,.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • the course is open to anyone wishing to further their sewing skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand how to set up a sewing machine
  • Demonstrate sewing an accurate 1/4 inch seam
  • Demonstrate how to use a rotary cutter safely
  • Understand the correct way to insert a zip using the sewing machine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • each week we will review the previous week's lesson will be reviewed by the tutor and students

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be expected to keep a folder of the course handouts given, for future reference

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • All the basic equipment will be at the centre for you to use. This includes: Sewing machines, pins, cutters, rulers, irons, but it would be useful if you brought your own sewing thread in your chosen colour. PLEASE NOTE: you will be expected to buy your own fabric for the projects you work on.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
