Exploring British Cinema: an introductory talk

This talk will provide an introduction to British film history through close reference to selected key films from different historical periods: Rescued by Rover (1905),The Manxman (1929), Whisky Galore (1949), Kes (1969), and Belle (2013). The talk will introduce ways to look at these films in greater depth. We will relate these films to ongoing debates about British cinema: including issues of community, identity, and the challenges faced by the film industry.

Course aim

The talk aims to introduce students to some of the key topics involved in the study of British cinema.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • No prior experience of film studies is necessary, but there will be an opportunity to share ideas and responses to the extracts shown.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • look in greater depth at some key extracts from British cinema.
  • relate the chosen extracts to the context in which they were made.
  • recognise some significant trends and developments in the history of British cinema.
  • identify key issues raised by the chosen extracts.
  • discuss in greater detail the film techniques in the selected films.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • There will be opportunities to share responses to the material in small groups and in the whole group. The teacher will also provide ways to develop your knowledge independently.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing is needed but pen and paper are useful for students who wish to make notes.
