Session 1 - Inconvenient Truths From documentaries to animations, films have played been a growing part in the green movement and our understanding about the environment and sustainability. In this session, we will look at films about the environment, the environmental crisis and its impact on our health and that of the planet, including films made by campaigners, educational films, Hollywood blockbusters using environmental issues as a dramatic backdrop and films about the green movement and environmental warriors. Session 2 - Environmental health hazards in the home - what are they and how to reduce them? Environmental health can sometimes feel distant and you may wonder how you can make a difference themselves. This talk will introduce current environmental health issues in the home and how you can be address them for your family, friends and community. W will include food additives, poisons in the home, the body’s bacteria and mobile devices.

Course aim

In this day school, we will explore how ideas, developments and perceptions of science have contributed to our understanding of the environment and the role it plays in our health.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • gain an overview of films exploring the environment and environmentalism
  • gain an insight into the development of our knowledge and thinking about the environment
  • gain knowledge about how the environment impacts on our health, both physically and mentally.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • feedback during discussions and activities during the day school

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • You may find it useful to bring a notebook and pen to make your own notes
