Textiles for the Outpost shop - Print and Textile Techniques

This exciting course will give students the opportunity to underpin knowledge and skills in basic printing techniques and using the sewing machine. Students will improve knowledge of colour and design to mix media and experiment with and manipulate a range of materials. The course strives to produce finished products that meet professional standards in order to supply the Outpost shop and gallery. There will be an opportunity to visit the Outpost shop to learn about current trends and the demands of the customer.

Course aim

This course introduces students to a range of textile and printing techniques that can be developed into seasonal decorations and cards and sold at the Outpost shop. It aims to develop skills in order to reach professional standards.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a sewing machine with confidence
  • Produce designs for a range of seasonal cards
  • Print using a range of different processes
  • Produce a range of finished cards that reach professional standards

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

This course is funded by the Greater London Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.
