Day School: Egyptian Hieroglyphs

Since the decipherment of Hieroglyphs in 1822 the discipline of Egyptology has been transformed, we can read papyri, stela, tomb and temple walls and build a real understanding of Pharaonic Egypt. This course will introduce Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs from first concepts, discussing core concepts and presenting common signs, and supporting the reading of key pieces of information from ancient sources such as kings and gods names.

Course aim

To introduce the concepts and characters of the ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic script

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read selected Pharaohs names within a cartouche with the aid of a sign list
  • Read the names of common Gods and Goddesses
  • Transliterate selected words written in uniliteral Hieroglyphs

How will I be taught?

  • The course will be a combination of presented material and individual exercises (which can if desired be carried out in pairs) with tutor support.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal, no tests or exams

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and/or pencil is essential, handouts will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • If time allows any study of Hieroglyphs will be helpful but no prior knowledge is assumed for this study day.
