Seminar: Three Philosophical Thought Experiments

Ref: C2420874

THREE PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS Unlike scientists, philosophers cannot do real-life experiments. But to clarify ideas they can conduct thought experiments – hypothetical situations, what-if? scenarios that encourage us to examine what our beliefs really are. Many of these thought experiments are highly imaginative, bizarre, outlandish; but they certainly make you think. We shall spend a morning considering and discussing three famous thought experiments: Philippa Foot’s Trolley Problem; Derek Parfit’s Teletransporter; and Jo Wolff’s Eye Lottery. Come along and enjoy a morning of thinking, arguing and scratching your head.
