Better than a Book Group: Best of the Bookers! 1

Ref: C2420854

The internationally renowned Booker Prize has promoted some of the most outstanding literary fiction over the past fifty years. In narratives drawn from both the 20th and 21st centuries, we examine the qualities of works from the perspectives of their topics, forms and techniques, focusing on a wide range of entries from authors whose reputations have crossed international boundaries. In texts from Muriel Spark and Ali Smith to Bruce Chatwin and Andrea Levy, we discuss the relevance of their contribution to social and political issues, to concerns with history and postcolonial debates.

To mark the fiftieth year of the Booker Prize, the course selects some of the most significant short-listed and winning entries, which we analyse in terms of their key topics and techniques, and justify their prize-winning literary qualities.
