The Art of Film: Masters of the Cinema

We will be looking at works from diverse directors who have shaped film and cinema, exploring different styles and voices from across film history and the world. There will be familiar names and seminal films as well as lesser known directors and works. This course is ideal for those who are new to film studies as well as film lovers keen to dig deeper and explore.

Course aim

This 5-week course explores cinema as the 7th art by looking at the work of key directors in film history and world cinema

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • By the end of the course I will been introduced to key film directors and their works
  • By the end of the course I will been introduced to key concepts of film and cinema
  • By the end of the course I will been introduced to the basics of film analysis

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
