Ancient Egypt: The Pyramid Age

This course will introduce the ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom or Pyramid age, studying the history, buildings and art of this foundation phase of the ancient Egyptian civilization. We will trace Egyptian history from unification to the decline of the Old Kingdom, we will study the evolution and construction of pyramids and state institutions. Old Kingdom art provided a benchmark for millennia in Ancient Egypt and in this course will be follow a number of important case studies considering tomb reliefs and artefacts. Finally we will review the end of the Old Kingdom including the 94 year reign of Pepi II.

Course aim

This course 'Ancient Egypt : The Pyramid Age' will introduce the ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom or Pyramid age, studying the history, buildings and art of this foundation phase of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Those new to the subject may benefit from reading an introduction to Egyptology although this is not essential.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compare the tomb decoration of a pharaoh with that of a private individual in the Old Kingdom
  • Describe the changes in pyramid design and construction through the Old Kingdom
  • Discuss the features and purpose of the Step Pyramid complex
  • Outline the main themes of the Pyramid Texts
  • Compare a First Dynasty Abydos Burial to Djoser's burial at Saqqara

How will I be taught?

  • The sessions will comprise of well-illustrated presentations with lots of chance for interaction.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal and ongoing with no tests or exams

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and paper will be useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Those new to the subject especially may benefit from reading an introductory text prior to, or during the course as time allows.
