This will be a course on nineteenth-century London. It will explore different aspects of the capital's history, including its political, social, economic and cultural history at this time. It will look at how the capital and its population changed over time and as well as looking at the English will probably look at incoming groups like the Irish and the Jews, and their role in certain movements, eg Chartism and socialism. Depending on students' preferences the course may look at some groups through literature, as well as some places through art, this can be discussed at the first session.

Course aim

To introduce students to nineteenth-century London and its population. To explore different aspects of its history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify different incoming groups to London in the nineteenth century.
  • Appreciate aspects of art and literature relating to London.
  • List various key political thinkers in London's history.
  • Understand the importance of economic change in London's story.
  • Assess the importance of different political and social groups to London's story.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen and paper are needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
