Russia 1905-2020: From Nicholas II to Putin

We will have in-depth discussion covering topics including the 1905 aborted revolution and two world wars, punctuated by the fall of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian revolutions of 1917, which after civil war formed the USSR. Also explored will be from the fall of Communism to Putin's realm. The Soviet mindset survived in this century. The relationship with other BRIC members will also be explored to better understand Moscow policy options.

Course aim

This course aims to enhance understanding of contemporary Russia in the light of its recent past.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have empathy with the people and some rulers of Russia.
  • compare and contrast urbanization, industrialization, and new social class formation in Russia and other societies.
  • express an appreciation of Russian literature.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
