Orientalism in 19th century Europe

In the 19th century, 'orientalist painting' was a specialism of the British and French Academy of Arts. This course will look at the works of a range of artists – such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Delacroix and John Frederick Lewis – and the representations of, what was defined as, the Orient (mainly Turkey, North Africa and the Middle East).

Course aim

To discuss how the 'Orient' was defined, and to analyse orientalist representations in paintings of the 19th century from the British and French Academy of Arts, with a view of understanding its contemporary implications.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define 'orientalism' and discuss its implications.
  • Discuss the history of 'orientalist paintings' in the 19th century as a specialism of the British and French Academy of Arts.
  • Identify the works of key artists of the 19th century defined as orientalist paintings.
  • Understand the contemporary implications of orientalist representations.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • Nothing else is needed
