The Middle East 1914 - 2019: From the Ottoman Downfall to "Terrorism"

We will have in-depth discussion on the Middle East, from the fall of the Turkish empire, through two world wars, the Suez affair, the rise of Israel, and from Arab spring to Iron winter.

Course aim

This course is to explain and explore how contemporary reality in the Middle East region is a product of its past, including external players.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • express a clearer understanding of the Middle East region.
  • have empathy with decision makers and those affected.
  • better understand the role of external players in regional affairs.
  • demonstrate greater knowledge of factors shifting Middle East populations, including urbanization, consumerism, and new social class formation.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Relevant cultural visits are recommended, including films and literature. We will discuss options in class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
