We often hear about the men involved in the October Revolution in Russia 1917, particularly Lenin and Trotsky, but there were a number of Bolshevik women who took part and who continued to work in government after the party had taken power. We'll also look a some revolutionary women from the 19th century, and why they were disappointed by how the 1917 Revolution turned out.

Course aim

A look at some of the women revolutionaries in Russia in the 19th century and the years leading up to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the two main revolutionary strands in Russia before the Revolution of 1917
  • Explain why women in 19th century Russia had to go abroad to study in higher education
  • Identify the event that triggered the revolution of February 1917

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • This includes a one-hour Zoom session, so you will need access to a computer and an internet connection with sound. Preferably a working webcam too.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
