Learn the basics of proofreading including ways to spot and correct common writing errors, such as spelling or grammar mistakes. The course is suitable for both native English speakers and those who’ve learnt English as a second language.

Course aim

This course will allow participants to develop their proofreading skills as they learn how to spot and correct common writing errors, such as spelling or grammar mistakes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise at least 3 common spelling mistakes.
  • Identify whether a piece of writing is written in a formal or informal style.
  • Write in a formal style.
  • Correctly use at least 3 types of punctuation.
  • Proofread a simple piece of writing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Students must bring a pen / pencil and notebook / pad of paper to each class. A folder or wallet to store worksheets would also be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
