In the Shadows: Spies and Temptresses

Is the spy a hero or a villain? The session will explore the changing fortunes of the spy, from the exotic temptress of Mata Hari through to the Soviet-recruited Cambridge agents, taking detours into the world of fiction with action hero James Bond and anti-hero Harry Palmer.

Course aim

To identify the main elements of the spy film and to show how our perception of the spy is affected by the influences of popular culture and key political events

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify the key ingredients of the spy film in terms of character and action.
  • appreciate and state how our attitudes towards the real-life spy have been affected by actual events and the stance taken by the media.
  • appreciate and briefly explain how the spy as hero affects our sense of national identity

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
