Brazil to Toledo: The Films of Terry Gilliam

Terry Gilliam is today recognised as a successful and imaginative director of large-scale films. This session will examine in some detail the various films he has produced, concentrating on three major areas: myth and fantasy (The Time Bandits, Jabberwocky) history and historical fiction (Baron Munchhausen, Brothers Grimm, Doctor Parnassus) science fiction (Brazil, 10 Monkeys, Fisher King)

Course aim

The session will provide an overview of the directing career of Terry Gilliam, showing how his early experiences as a student and a member of the Monty Python team shaped the way he created a series of fantasy worlds.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explain that Gilliam has his own personal and individual cinematic style
  • describe how his treatment of familiar myths and stories deviates from the approach taken by other storytellers
  • identify the three distinct subject areas explored in his films (myth and fantasy, history and historical fiction, science fiction)
  • explain how his early experiences as an art student and subsequent artist have provided him with an eye for individual set design
  • gain some insight into and state how he works with actors, particularly stars

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
