Art for Textiles: Part 1

A lively and interactive practical course that uses a fun approach to drawing, mono printing, colour and stitch techniques, to explore textile art. This introductory course leads to developing your creative practice Part 2.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to introduce fun and interactive practical textile techniques; patching and piecing collage, stitch and other decoration techniques. to explore creative self expression such as stitch meditation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use creative drawing print and stitch techniques to develop explore your creative self expression and to develop your knowledge of decorative art in textiles
  • Gain experience in a range of textile decoration techniques that you can apply in further creative self expression and to make future textile items
  • Learn how to use primary and secondary research to develop your creative textile work and design ideas
  • Learn how to develop and apply your creative knowledge in a critical context
  • Learn about the history of textiles in a cultural context

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be encouraged to reflect on what your have learned in a sketchbook or notebook for your own personal use.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Your will be expected to bring to the classes other work textile work that you have done during the term outside of the classes

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Access to facebook and instagram pages may be helpful to you if you already have access but are not essential and you will be directed to specific pages by the tutor during the class
