Join our friendly and supportive art group and be involved in practical tasks based on the work of different artists. Find out about the materials and techniques used to produce art. Explore how art is used to communicate and represent themes. Understand the importance of the messages we send out to others, in the way that we dress and the colours that we prefer. Look at the ways art can build confidence and therefore improve and assist social skills.Learn to assess and appreciate various artists and genres. Discuss and compare different styles. Communicate your thoughts and share your ideas with the group. Demonstrate the use of various materials and techniques in your own work. Develop and expand on your creative skills.

Course aim

To examine and communicate ideas about the work of different artists. To produce expressive individual art work based on various themes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have assessed and started to appreciate the work of different artists.
  • have discussed and compared various artistic styles.
  • Communicated and shared opinions about the subjects.
  • have demonstrated the use of various materials and techniques.
  • have developed my creative skills.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Each student will keep a diary which may include a description of the session, information on the subjects, and thoughts and opinions. This is useful for the tutor to assess development and to facilitate feedback.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
