Fashions Through History

This course will explore different fashions at a range of points in history. Students will learn about the types of garments worn, accessories used and fabrics available in each era. They will then have the opportunity to make an item appropriate to each era to understand the practicalities and construction of them. This course is suitable for those with some experience in sewing as there will be the opportunity to make an item from each era to compliment the information learnt about fashions, practicalities and fabrics used.

Course aim

This course will explore fashions over time, examining the fabrics used and the styles adopted

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn about changing fashions over time
  • Understand the changes in fabrics used over time
  • Make an item from at least 2 different eras
  • Learn why garments were constructed in a particular way

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, tailors chalk and seam ripper

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
