Making Items to Sell

This course is aimed at those who are already sewing and who are keen to take this forward to sell their products. The course will provide and insight into some of the aspects to consider as to whether it is a viable proposition including costing, marketing, competition, design, customer base and unique selling points. Students will be encouraged to research aspects of the market themselves and bring this to their work

Course aim

This course will cover the main elements of setting up a small sewing business with a view to students being able to use the techniques to set up their own business

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for those who wish to take their sewing further to sell their items

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Consider who the customer base will be
  • Research design ideas and consider the USP
  • Cost out each product
  • Set realistic pricing for the products
  • Present and advertise the goods

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, chalk, and seam ripper

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • The course will provide an insight into making a sewing hobby into a business.
