The course will look at the origins of the fictional detective, leading from Jonathan Wild to Sherlock Holmes. You will then be shown a contrast between two fictional detectives, Hercule Poirot and Inspector Morse, who have become popular through TV adaptations.

Course aim

This is an introduction to the detective character, looking at how the character originated and then focusing on Poirot and Morse.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is for students with an interest in Detective Fiction

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the main characteristics of the fictional detective
  • Understand how these characteristics apply to Hercule Poirot and Inspector Morse
  • Identify who the first detectives were and how the genre developed

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Have a pen and paper handy

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
