This course is aimed at people with a reasonable level of computer skills who want to learn the basics of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Each subject is covered in sufficient depth to enable students to use the basics of each programme but it is also intended to provide the student with sufficient information to consider future learning options and work focus.

Course aim

This course is aimed at people with a reasonable level of computer skills who want to learn the basics of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students will be expected to have a good knowledge of navigating MS Windows and opening and closing programmes. Basic file management to the level of creating new documents, naming them and storing them in the correct folder is also desirable.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a working overview of the functions and main features of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • be able to create, format and store a simple document (Microsoft Word)
  • Create a simple PowerPoint presentation including importing pictures, shapes and tables etc (Microsoft PowerPoint)
  • Create and populate a simple accounting spreadsheet including carrying out calculations and inserting formulas (Microsoft Excel)
  • Be able to make an informed decision about future training requirements in MS Office and identify future courses

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if students bring a notebook and folder for making notes and storing handouts.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students should satisfy themselves before attending the course that they can use a mouse and have sufficient typing skills to enable then to create documents at a basic level. The ability to create folders and store files is also desirable.
