The Return of the Exiles: The Leicester Homecoming 1910

Ref: C2342956

A unique and little-known event took place in Leicester in 1910 when around 300 ‘exiles’ who had left for other parts of the world returned for a week-long ‘Homecoming’. Who were they, and what featured in the programme devised for their ‘edification and amusement’ while they were here? Why did they leave Leicester in the first place, and what do we know of their experience in the countries in which they settled? By exploring these questions we will also learn something about Britain’s relations with its Empire in the years before the First World War.
