Alterations and Customising Garments for Beginners

More than 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes into landfill in the UK every year.This course will teach how to alter clothes to fit, how to re-style out of date clothes, how to customize clothes and repair clothes so they last longer. It will look at fashion sustainability and the circular economy of fashion. It encourages re-cycling and shopping at charity shops.

Course aim

This course will teach how to alter clothes to fit, how to re-style out of date clothes, how to customize clothes and repair clothes so they last longer. It will look at fashion sustainability and the circular economy of fashion.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • You will need to have made a few garments before and have an interest in the issues around sustainability.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify three garments that are likely to go to landfill
  • 2. Explore which fabrics are easiest to recycle and describe the impact of non-biodegradable fabrics on the planet
  • 3. Explain your fabric, cut, quality and fashion choices when choosing one garment from a charity shop or vintage store (sustainability, quality and identification)
  • 4. Create a plan to alter / customize a garment chosen from a suitable source using simple methods
  • 5. Carry out your plan on the garment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
