This course will teach how to start a business altering and repairing clothes for customers. We will cover how to target your client base, how to market your business, costing and how to document the finances. The course will also cover how to carry out the most common alterations and repairs to garments.

Course aim

This course will teach how to start a business altering and repairing clothes for customers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • You need to have experience making and altering garments.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Consider who the customer base will be.
  • 2. Research design ideas and consider the USP and learn how to market your business
  • 3. Cost out each product or calculate your hourly rate and learn how to invoice
  • 4. Learn how to document sales and costs as a sole trader
  • 5. Demonstrate 2 of the most common garment alterations/repairs

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
