Learn to Play and Sing aims to deliver creative and stimulating musical activities directly to students at Rhubarb Farm in Mansfield. The course will cover many aspects of music making, including group singing workshops, lyric writing exercises, song composition, percussion exercises and rehearsal and performance opportunities. The course aims to stimulate and nurture an interest in music whilst developing confidence and enhancing general health and well being.

Course aim

Learn to Play and Sing is a music course for students at Rhubarb Farm. The course will provide an introduction to music, including group singing workshops, lyric writing exercises, song composition, percussion, rehearsal and performance.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute either a vocal or percussive element to a rehearsal of chosen material from a folder of popular songs.
  • Demonstrate an ability to play two new chords or rhythms on a chosen instrument.
  • Repeat the lyrics to at least one song either independently, with promoting or with guidance.
  • Construct a lyrical passage (single word or whole phrase) for inclusion in a new group composition.
  • Show recorded evidence of at least one new group composition.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
