The Caribbean

Ref: C2342922

The islands within the Caribbean Sea have experienced similar histories of slavery, colonialism, and exploitation. Despite their linguistic, cultural and geographical differences they share a common history. Subjected to a considerable degree of exploitation by the major countries of Europe and subject also to a variety of internal migration from countries outside the Americas, they have for the most part achieved a degree of political and economic independence. Themes to be discussed: Initial explorations; 'No Peace on the Main' - European rivalries expressing themselves in the Caribbean; The rise and fall of sugar and tobacco; Immigration and Emigration
