Tai Chi and Qigong has many physical and emotional benefits. It is an exercise system that is practiced all over the world. It helps health and vitality, promote better circulation and improve posture, balance and co ordination. The course and practice will introduce the Yang Style Tai Chi and Health Qigong style in a slow, relaxed manner in co ordination with your breathing. Tai Chi is now recognised by certain parts of the NHS as a way of helping to assist in maintaining better health and wellbeing. Everyone is welcome and the movements can be done either seated or standing depending on what is most comfortable for each individual. All ages and experiences are welcome.
Course aim
The course is designed to introduce the beginner and those with some experience in a gradual unhurried manner to the fundamental principles of the Chinese arts of Qigong and Tai Chi.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Understand how to bring greater awareness to my breathing.
- Using the skills learnt, identify at least one of the principles of the practice of tai chi (eg method of stepping, use of hips and waist, maintaining a relaxed posture).
- Demonstrate a complete tai chi movement and know the name of that movement.
- Have gained an enhanced awareness of my centre of balance, overall posture and level of relaxation.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- The tutor will demonstrate and help will each practice to ensure full understanding is reached by the student. There will be time for questions and practical work. Observation and hand-outs to facilitate learning.
What else do I need to know?
- Nothing else is needed
- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
