Cleopatra’s Egypt fell to Rome in 30BCE becoming a Roman province until at least the 4th century AD/CE. We will journey through the history of this period during which Egypt adapts as a prosperous segment of the Roman Empire yet managing to retain many of its old traditions.

Course aim

Assessment of the important role that ancient Egypt and its citizens played in the expanding Roman empire. Using information from historical literature, ancient archives and period burials to source and explore both life and death in Roman Egypt.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is open to anyone

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Follow and understand the chronological order of this late period of Egypt’s history which was no longer ruled by pharaohs and queens.
  • Identify the particular geographical areas of Egypt which may have influenced its development and transition into an important Roman province.
  • Gain some understanding of the social and political structure of Roman Egypt including family, law and order and the military.
  • Identify the Roman influence in the style of statuary and the images of gods and goddesses on temple walls in Egypt.
  • Recognise the innovative funerary practices of the Roman period in comparison to earlier trends and styles in Egypt's history.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be given the opportunity to source online for websites and organisations in your own time. This will add to the sources used during the sessions and contribute to information for the group.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Nothing is needed, although pen and paper for note taking, queries and feedback would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
