The Enigma of Edward Elgar; His Life, Times and Music

This course will examine the unusual career of the Edwardian English composer, Edward Elgar, since he was largely self taught, and will consider why his music became recognised as quintessentially `English Musical Style`. In order to assess the characteristics of Edward Elgar`s musical style, the basic elements of music will be explained and discussed. In addition consideration will be given to socio/political circumstances evident during Edward Elgar`s lifetime.

Course aim

This course will help students to learn more about the remarkable life, times and music of Edward Elgar, and the uniqueness of his position in the history of English musical composition in the late 19th and early 20th century.

  • No skills or experience needed

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to identify the basic elements bound within music.
  • Be able to briefly describe Edward Elgar`s life circumstances and contemporary times.
  • Be able to briefly describe Edward Elgar`s musical style.
  • Have a brief recall of several of Edward Elgar`s musical compositions.
  • Be encouraged to listen to more music composed by Edward Elgar . e.g at local concerts . on the radio ..classic FM etc.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
