Summer Holiday - Summer Films

Everybody has their idea of the perfect holiday, whether it is to explore new cultures, do exciting things, or merely self-indulge. But holidays can be a time when we find out uncomfortable truths about ourselves, or discover talnets we did not know we possess. This course will look at the highs and lows of the holiday experience, told from filmmakers from around the World.

Course aim

To appreciate the range of styles and themes covered in holiday films. To see how different films adopt individual ways to explore the subject, according to the destination visited and the people involved, whether staff, locals or visitors

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give at least 5 examples from the range of films that examine the holiday experience
  • Briefly describe at least 3 varieties of styles and approaches taken by filmmakers when tackling films about holidays
  • Explore and explain, using examples, how the holiday experience, away from the distraction of our everyday lives, can lead us to discover something new about ourselves and those we know
  • Describe, with examples, how different cultures view the tourist industry
  • explore and list at least 3 examples of the range of different landscapes and cultures that can be explored around the World

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
